How to practice humility – first of a three part series
The Bible in the book of Ephesians says “Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.” (Ephesians 4:2 NLT)
Wouldn’t our world be a lot nicer if we could all make an effort to practice humility in our everyday lives! I like the quote “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.” (Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life, 2002)
Join me as we work through a three part series of practical ways we can work toward being humbler.
Part One – Developing Mindset
“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT). Work to accept and be grateful for the life you have while striving toward your goal without complaining.
“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” (Romans 8:28 NLT) Be an optimist. Expect good things to happen.
“Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth, a stranger, not your own lips.” (Proverbs 27:2 NLT). Humility is not false modesty; accept credit where credit is due.
“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7 NLT). Be self-aware and know what flaws you need to work on. Make every effort to always be improving and do not be too proud to ask for help.
“This is what the Lord says: Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches.” (Jeremiah 9:23 NLT). Avoid bragging.
To have a humble mindset is to think soberly about oneself and to acknowledge that we have to thank God for all that we achieve. As the Bible says “It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God.” (2 Corinthians 3:5 NLT)
