Bible reflections —promises (part 2)
Last week we started looking at what God promises in the Bible. So what else can we find that God promises in His word?
In the Old Testament, God tells us through His prophets: “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him” (Nahum 1:7, NIV)
So there is the promise that He cares, and that He is a refuge whenever we need it.
And David, who was a very famous king of Israel in Bible times, and a man who had great faith in God, was moved by God to write this promise from God: “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” (Psalms 34:7-8, NIV)
Once again, there is the promise of refuge.
But the promises from God are not just in the Old Testament of the Bible either.
In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul wrote about God's promises to believers in God who were obviously anxious: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends (i.e. rises above) all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus… Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:7-9, NIV)
The "peace of God" sounds pretty good, doesn't it! And God's promise here is that if we ask and trust God to help us, and if we put into practice what He shows us in the Bible about how to live our lives, then we will experience that peace.
This then leads on to more questions, doesn't it!
For example — how does God want us to live our lives? That's a discussion for another blog.
I want to leave you with one more Bible verse. And it opens the way to exploring how God wants us to live. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NIV)
Wow! That's a big promise, isn't it! And the key here is for us to believe in Him.
In my final ‘Promises’ blog I will explore that a bit more.
