God is

We sometimes try to limit God. Some people do this by denying He exists! That’s about as limiting as you can get I guess.

But even when we believe in God we can still in effect limit Him unintentionally. Even when we describe God as being all-powerful, all knowing and everywhere present, full of majesty and glory, the creator and sustainer of everything.  How so?

Well of course those descriptions apply to God. And so much more. But they all come from our perspective. Our perspective is limited to our experience and the fact that we have both a beginning and an end. How are we to understand let alone describe the infinite!

A line of thought for you. Perhaps the best way to describe God is this. ‘God is’. In the bible book of Exodus God describes himself as ‘I am that I am’. He didn’t add anything else descriptive. He doesn’t need to. And we should simply and gratefully accept Him for what He is. Our relative positions are such that this is a logical choice for us to make.

Not a great approach to convince 21st century humankind? Agreed. But there is one thing that strikes me. If God created and sustains everything who are we to question Him!  And that’s exactly what God says to Job in the last couple of chapters of the bible book of Job. Job had demanded that God explain to him the reason he was suffering. What’d God say? Amongst other things God asked Job ‘where were you (Job) when I (God) created the earth?’  Puts things into perspective - for me anyway.

Despite our relative positions what  an amazing privilege it is to know that God cares about us - if we want Him to. Worth finding out more? I think so.
