Light of the world

I have a desk calendar with a quote or saying for each day of the year. I came across this one: “Does the room light up when you walk in, or when you walk out?”

Obviously, the idea is to make each of us as individuals examine how we come across to others – as a positive or negative personality. It’s humbling to think that Jesus didn’t just light up a room – he was the light of the world!

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:2, NIV)

What did Jesus mean by this?  Well, there are two aspects to His light. Firstly, there’s the way we live and behave now. Jesus taught that we should be kind, compassionate and forgiving. He taught that we should love one another.

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:12, NIV)

Even if you don’t have any great connection with God, Jesus and the bible message, I think we would all agree that we see and hear of some ugly, horrible things going on in our world. If only everyone could be loving to each other as Jesus taught, what a different earth this would be!

The second aspect to Jesus’ words about light is the really exciting one. The light of life is a reference to a future time when Jesus will return to the earth, bringing the gift of eternal life with him.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in me has everlasting life.” (John 6:47, NKJV)

Surely it’s worth checking this out further, to bring a little light into your life?!
