The raging calm
If you ever want to make me happy, take me to the ocean.
Whether it is the stillness of the glass-like water at an ocean beach, or the thundering power of enormous waves crashing onto rocky cliffs, I love the ocean.
Is it about childhood memories of carefree holidays at sunny beaches?
Or is it because we have learnt that oceans cover more than 70% of the earth's surface, and that more than 90% of our oceans remain unexplored?
Or that we probably only know about a small number of the species of creatures living in the oceans?
Perhaps it is the fact that for all its diverse beauty, we really don't have any control over it at all.
It is all of these things for me.
And it is the fact that when I go to a beach, whether the ocean is raging or calm, I can see it and hear it and smell it and feel it.
The ocean fills my senses.
The ocean clears my mind.
Sometimes it is exactly what I need to remind me of the things that are really important in life.
For example the Bible reveals to me that God created us, and all that we see in the world around us.
In Genesis you can read: “God called the dry ground ‘land,’ and the gathered waters he called ‘seas.’ And God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:10, NIV)
And in the Psalms it says: “Who is like you, LORD God Almighty? You, LORD, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them.” (Psalms 89:8-9, NIV)
You can search the Bible for yourself and see that God alone has the power to create and control the oceans.
And there is a real purpose behind all that the Bible reveals.
Search it for yourself to find out.
