War
Despite a thinly veiled tissue of lies, President Putin has done what many observers were predicting for some time – he has ordered the invasion of Ukraine. As I write this blog, fighting continues – we suspect Ukraine has put up a stiffer resistance than expected – however, this may change quite soon as Putin has threatened the use of nuclear weapons unless Ukraine surrenders.
I find it quite shocking in this so called ‘modern era’, where much air time is devoted to human rights and political correctness, that such a thing could happen. Despite his every move being almost instantaneously broadcast to the world, despite the almost unanimous condemnation of world leaders and despite numerous sanctions being imposed against Russia, this man has proceeded with his violent agenda.
It has been reported that both soldiers and civilians have died. Property has been destroyed and over two hundred thousand Ukrainians have packed some personal possessions and fled to Poland as refugees. A couple of weeks ago they had homes, and were leading relatively normal lives.
Where does it stop?
Unfortunately, this is not the only armed conflict going on in the world – just look it up on Google. Russia and Ukraine are large enough to be considered news worthy, but there are people suffering in Africa, the Middle East and South America. It wasn’t that long ago that the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. There is also some speculation that China is watching this current situation with interest, possibly with Taiwan in mind.
The only power great enough to stop all this ambition and violence belongs to God. He has promised the world will be at peace under the rule of His son, Jesus Christ.
“The Lord will mediate between nations and will settle international disputes. They will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer fight against nation, nor train for war anymore.” (Isaiah 2:4, NLT)
This is a time I’m looking forward to and if you like the sound of it too, please read your Bible for more information.
