Was the stone rolled away?
Too many words to count have been written and spoken about the meaning and origin of life – from the serious to the humorous. The movie ‘Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’ offered the humorous conclusion that the answer is ‘42’! Depending on your sense of humour that gives a laugh. But it doesn’t answer the existential question does it.
Many, though by no means all Christians, believe that the answer can be obtained in the Bible. But even among Christians there has been much said and written about whether God’s Bible is true, partially true, or altogether false. Then there is the argument about the source of life being creation or evolution. Or some sort of hybrid.
All in all, it can be confusing.
Here’s a thought that to my way of thinking provides a basis for arriving at a conclusion – not one that can be proved but one that is logical, and I believe, correct. It focuses on just one event. If it happened, then there are consequences. If it didn’t then there’s no need to believe any form of Christianity.
A bit over 2,000 years ago a man was executed in one of the most cruel ways ever devised by man. He was crucified. Upon his death he was placed in a tomb a bit like a cave and the entrance was sealed with a heavy stone. Several days later two of his friends were on their way to the tomb to pay their respects. On the way they worried about how the stone sealing the tomb could be moved. But when they got there the stone had been rolled away.
The man was Jesus Christ. The question ‘was the stone rolled away?’ is an important one. It either was, or it wasn’t. What is certain from accounts from the time and not long after, both in the Bible and as a matter of historical record, is that a small group believed that it was true. They believed that Jesus was raised from the dead and many claimed to have seen and talked to Him. So strong was this belief, and so obviously credible, that this small group despite many attempts to eradicate it, grew to become Christianity.
If the stone was rolled away and Jesus was raised from the dead, then that’s a profound turning point in history that has never been replicated. If I believe that extraordinary event to be true, how can I not believe the rest of the Bible? And I do believe! It’s my hope that many others do too.
