God knows

Have you heard someone say ‘God knows’ recently? What did they mean by that?

Here’s a definition I found online: “Used to emphasise that you do not understand something at all or have no knowledge of something at all: God knows where he put the keys!; “What did he mean by that?” “God knows!”” (Cambridge Dictionary 2022)

The expression was an oath in English in the 13th century. It was written as “God wot”. It sounds like something you’d find in Shakespeare’s plays doesn’t it!

There is an unintended irony in the use of this expression. It is in fact true. God does indeed know everything.

“What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” (Luke 12:6-7, NLT)

If you take this literally, and I do, the ramifications are awesome. The intellect, the knowledge, the awareness of God is so far beyond our understanding it’s hard to grasp even that much.

Indeed God knows. Everything. And He cares about us a great deal if we want Him in our lives.

This, and so very much more, is all in his book. The Bible.
