Words & sayings

I have an interest in words and sayings, and I also believe in God and His message to us to be found in the Bible, which I read every day.

I was fascinated many years ago to find out from two close friends, who also read their Bible often, that there are many common phrases that actually originate from the Bible, and they had made a list of them.

So, I looked into it further and was told that there is a book written about it called 'Begat' by David Crystal with 260 references he had found in the Bible.

I have also made my own list and found a further 90, not listed in his book! The following are just a few phrases, which can be confirmed as originating from the Bible with a quick Google search:

‘Thorn in my side (or flesh)’

‘No rest (or peace) for the wicked’

‘Wolf in sheep's clothing’

‘How are the mighty fallen’

‘O ye of little faith’

As I've said, this is of interest to me, but of far more importance is that there is much more to learn from God's amazing book the Bible, as it tells us about God and His son Jesus and God’s plan to sort out our troubled world.
