Certainty
I think we’ve all heard the well known saying, (famously used by Benjamin Franklin) “In this world nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes”. These days a much older quote seems to have become very relevant – “Nothing is permanent except change” (Heraclitus circa 500BC).
As humans, we tend to like a certain amount of change – we get bored when everything stays the same. But when many changes come our way all at once, we can become overwhelmed, and wish for more stability and certainty in our lives.
Since the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, we have been faced with many changes and indeed challenges. The cost of living has gone up significantly, presenting real hardship for many people. The worst part about this is the inability of authorities and governments to fix the problems.
God offers us the best of both certainty and change. On many occasions in the Bible, God is referred to as a source of comfort and stability for those who are in trouble: “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” (Psalm 46:1, NLT)
But He is also offering change in the future which will be better than anything we’ve ever experienced before: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21:4, NLT)
