What’s important?
My desk top calendar has a saying, “When you’re on your deathbed, the inbox will still be full.” Although the author is unknown, the meaning of this statement is pretty clear. There are things in life more important than the job. Nobody wants to face death full of regret about what they should have done.
The Bible has a fairly similar message to this: ‘Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.’ (James 4:13-14 NLT)
We really need to take stock of what’s important in our lives, not just let time fritter away. I’ve been guilty of it and perhaps you can relate as well. Aside from the job, things that are typically important to us include family, health, hobbies and general happiness. You can probably think of others.
God is appealing to us to make some space in our lives for Him as well. We all know that eventually this life will come to an end. God is saying He can give us a better life beyond this one.
In the same chapter from James we read: ‘Come close to God, and God will come close to you.’ (v8)
This is an amazing opportunity – it’s worth opening your Bible to check it out!
