The Bible tells us that God brought light into the world on the first day of creation. Prior to that it says, “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep….”  (Genesis 1:2 NIV)

If we didn’t have light, our world would be a miserable place indeed. In fact, without it eventually nothing would survive.

After that initial creation, God has inspired the authors of the Bible to use light as a metaphor for something spiritual. For example, Isaiah wrote about God’s people, the Jews, like this:

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” (Isaiah 9:2 NIV)

The Jews weren’t living in physical darkness: the sun was still shining on them. Yet because they had turned away from God, in His eyes they were in a dark place. The great light being spoken of in this verse is pointing forward to the coming of God’s son, Jesus, to bring God back into people lives.

To take away the spiritual darkness.

Jesus confirmed and fulfilled this prophecy as he said in John chapter 8:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 NIV)

These incredible consistent little threads pop up right throughout the Bible. Words written hundreds of years apart come together to create a total picture of God’s plan to save us from permanent darkness.
