Pride goes before a fall

There are some sobering words in the Bible which point out the uncomfortable fact that none of us know where we will be tomorrow, or even if we’ll be alive. In good times our pride can make us believe we are doing well.

But consider these words: ‘Look here, you who say, Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—its here a little while, then its gone.’ (James 4:13-14 NLT)

What’s the alternative to pride then? The words in the Bible’s book of James go on to say: ‘What you ought to say is, If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.’ (James 4:15-16 NLT)

The saying “Pride goes before a fall” comes from the Bible too. “Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18 NLT)

Overcoming any pride we have and acknowledging God will likely help us in our lives now.

But God offers us so much more. The Bible contains all we need to know about how to acknowledge God, what He wants us to do for Him, and what He will do for us.
