Getting closer to God

Do you want to get closer to God? If you do, then baptism is a really important topic to understand properly.

Read Gal 3:26-28 which begins “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith…” (NIV).

Logically if we are children of God, that means we are brothers and sisters of Jesus. Awesome! But what does it mean to be baptised into Christ?

First of all we have to know and believe the message of hope that Jesus taught as it says in Acts 8:12 “But when they believed… the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised, both men and women.” (NIV).

Next we have to accept that we need to have past sins against God washed away - in other words be sorry for past bad behaviour and wish to start fresh. See Acts 2:38: “Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (NIV).

Finally we need to be totally immersed in water. Why total immersion? Well, if you want to clean anything properly, you wash it completely. The Apostle Paul talked about being baptised into Christ as like being buried then re-born. Romans 6:3-4 reads “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death. We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may have a new life.” (NIV)

Being baptised is a really important step in building your relationship with God as it shows him that you have understood and accepted his message, and that you want to dedicate your life to him.
