Why only 71%?

Have you ever stood on the beach and watched the ocean? Most of us would have at some stage in our lives – it’s very easy to be drawn in, relaxed and even almost entranced by it’s rhythm and sound.

Have you ever caught a wave? Be it on a surfboard, a bodyboard or just body surfing, the feeling of immense power is the same. If you have ever been dumped by a big wave, then you have experienced a small fraction of this power first hand!

Some of you might have been sailing, or fishing, or even on a cruise of some sort. If so, you may have experienced the monstrous, mountain-like waves that an angry ocean can produce.

Ever wondered why this immensely powerful fluid mass (which covers 71% of our planet) stops at the beach? Why doesn’t it just keep on rolling and crashing, flooding our cities and covering the rest of the land?

What’s really stopping it? Referring to God, the Bible says “You placed the world on its foundation so it would never be moved. You clothed the earth with floods of water, water that covered even the mountains... Then you set a firm boundary for the seas, so they would never again cover the earth.”  (Psalm 104:5-9 NLT)

It’s worth remembering the next time you stand on the beach, mesmerised by the awesome power of the ocean, it was God who created this wonder. And it’s the same God who continues to contain it and keep it at the beach, where we can safely enjoy it.
