Bible reflections — promises (part 1)

Trusting in a promise takes faith, doesn't it. It means having confidence in a person or an object or a concept. And often the certainty of that promise will be something that you weigh up in your mind, before you decide whether or not you are going to trust it. So it certainty can be a very valuable commodity! Perhaps it has always been the same but it seems that now, more than ever, uncertainty is everywhere, and causing real problems too.

So where does the Bible fit into this thought?

Well, if you are willing to consider that the Bible is God's word, and God's message to all of us, one thing you learn is that God and His word are certain and unchanging.

For example, in the Bible we read: “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil?” (Numbers 23:19, NIV)

So, what does God promise in the Bible?

Here is one answer: in the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament we are urged to: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV)

God promises that if you trust in Him, lean on Him, and submit to Him, then He will guide your path and you will never be truly lost.

Part 2 about promises will be in my next blog, but until then why not start searching the Bible for yourself and see what other promises you can find?
