The first engine

I was lying in bed in the early hours one morning trying to get back to sleep. I had already counted sheep, thought of tranquil places, and sung songs in my head all to no avail, when something I had recently read popped into my mind. It was all about relaxing. Starting from the toes, gradually moving upward, while concentrating on each particular area as you go.

Soon after attempting this I was acutely conscious of my breathing. My heart, rhythmically working as I did so – beating, in and out, in and out, just like a machine or an engine. Our body works just like a clockwork machine, and with the same precision.

The human body was the first ever machine, I thought. Prepared and built by God with components He knew well. Components that make up our DNA and are the basis for all things. [link blog for March 22nd 2019 “Design”]

If our body is a machine then our heart must be the engine. An engine is designed to cause other parts to ‘work’. There are many, many machines or engines working throughout our body all the time.

When we look in detail at the design and workings of our body’s functions, the timing of each so precise, we see the vast number of intricate and minuscule parts it takes to make another part work. We also find that it could not possibly have been jumbled together over time, to eventually emerge as a working body. It took design – carefully thought out design.

Design is not only found in our body and its functions but in all the Earth. What God created in the Garden of Eden was beautiful and functional in every aspect. Over time man has degraded this beauty and functionality, but when the time is right God will make everything perfect again.

Humans and creatures will live in peace and His glory will fill the earth.

The prophet Isaiah paints a beautiful picture of the future peaceful earth:

“The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the cobra’s den, and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”

(Isaiah 11:6-9, NIV)
