Fact or fiction?

As someone who believes in God, from time to time I have discussions with people who don’t. Quite often these conversations go along the lines of where did we come from, how was our planet, our solar system and indeed our universe formed…

One person I was talking with said to me, “But what I believe in is fact!” Sadly, a lot of people hear the various theories that are current around these questions and assume they are proven facts. For example, the prevailing theory about our universe’s beginnings is called ‘the big bang’. If that is indeed how the universe was formed, I believe it could have been caused by God. For those who don’t believe in God, there are some quite tricky questions to answer. I’ve attached a link here to an article that provides some possible answers to the question, “What existed before the big bang?”

It’s too long for me to summarise here, so I will just say that the answer is not clear, there are many suggestions and no certainties. The other thing to note is that more theories are popping up all the time, so it’s very hard to ensure information is current.

As was pointed out in a previous blog, we have a choice in what we believe. In regard to the question “what existed before the big bang?” it’s certainly not a matter of ‘fact vs. fiction’. Scientists freely acknowledge they just don’t know. Based on the laws of physics as we currently understand them, what scientists do know is for the ‘big bang’ to have occurred, an unbelievable amount of energy had to be applied. The choice is whether this explosion was caused by some unexplained accident, or was it designed by a power far beyond our understanding?

If you’re prepared to put some time and thought into this choice, I believe a more logical conclusion becomes obvious – but it’s up to you. The question of dark matter in our universe is the subject of a future blog and may help clarify this choice further!

In the meantime it’d be good for us all to spend some time with God’s bible.
