Worry

One of my favourite passages in the Bible is these words from Jesus: “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (Matthew 6:34, NLT)

How true that has turned out to be for me. As I sit here writing this, today’s trouble in my life is enough. Tomorrow may be better. Or it may be worse. Or just the same. But at least one thing is certain. My worrying about what tomorrow will bring won’t change what it does bring. And the very act of worrying about that unknown may well make both today and tomorrow worse. It certainly won’t help.

You may have noticed that Jesus’ words I quoted started with ‘So’ indicating they followed on from something else. Here are the words again together with the words they followed on from:

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (Matthew 6:33-34, NLT)

That’s the main reason not to worry too much. If we are looking and working towards the Kingdom of God above everything else, then worry is superfluous. God will care for us now. And in the future to come all the sources of worry, both within us and in the troubled world around us, will be gone. Forever.

All this and so much more is in God’s Bible. Definitely worth reading. Especially in these troubled times.
