Ask not what God can do for you… ask what you can do for God

Obeying the laws and principles set out by God can provide a long list of perks. If chosen, the Christian way of life can bring you peace of mind, strength, wisdom, understanding, courage, family, wealth, happiness… the list goes on. But is there a danger in this way of thinking? Absolutely!

When reading the bible it can be so easy to fall into the natural, sometimes selfish side of human nature and ask, “how does this commandment benefit me?” Perhaps it would be helpful here to remember that this life is not all about me… What does that mean? Let’s look to our ultimate example: tempted in the wilderness, persecuted, executed… how did obeying God benefit Jesus?

Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice to pay the price for all our sins. Because of this, we have the chance of salvation – living forever in God’s perfect, peaceful kingdom to come. So yes, it’s a fine line to tread sometimes; we have so much to be grateful for, but we can still find ourselves asking what more God could be doing for us – I am certainly guilty of this way of thinking at times. So maybe it’s time we flip the question and start asking more frequently “what can I do for God?”
