Bending towards the light

If you put a cut flower in a vase by a window the flower bends toward the light. The light is essential to it and it responds accordingly.

The example of the flower led me to think about us. As I see it we have a need for ‘light’ in our lives. But do we bend towards it? Or do we remain vertical in the vase? Or even bend away from the light?

The Bible tells us how we need to live our lives. Most of that is also common sense. A man once asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was; in other words what’s the most important standard to adhere to in life. Jesus’ answer was instructive.

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’” Matthew 22:37-40 (NIV)

So I leave you with a question. The flower knows what it needs and bends towards the light. Why don’t we?
