A Water Thread

We often talk about the consistency of messages in the Bible, sometimes referred to as the ‘golden thread’.

Here’s another example, this time using water.

We all know that water is essential for life. We’re told that the average human can only survive for three days without it. So far, no other planet has been found with water in liquid form on its surface. It doesn’t seem coincidental then, that so far, no other living organisms have been found either. The Bible uses the life-giving properties of water as an analogy for the hope of eternal life that God is offering to all of us.

“….The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.  With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.’’ (Isaiah 12:2-3 NIV)

These verses are not a reference to drinking physical water with special properties like the fountain of youth. They refer to God’s gift to us, which He has made available through the agency of His son, Jesus Christ.

Jesus confirms this in the New Testament when he was speaking to a Samaritan woman, highlighting the water thread once more.

‘Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”’  (John 4:13-14 NIV)

And in the last book of the Bible, we are given a reference to what Jesus will say when he comes back to the earth. It's a time we believe is not too far from now.

“He said to me: ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.’”  (Revelation 21:6 NIV)

God is inviting all of us to enjoy His gift.

It’s up to us to decide if we will accept it.
