Overcoming inertia
Not so long ago my wife, our two cats and I moved interstate. It’s a very easy thing to say ‘we moved interstate’ however it is a far more complicated thing to actually do.
If you start to think about what’s involved, you can frighten yourself quite quickly; let’s think about a few of things that need to be considered:
Selling your current home, but first…
Getting your current home sorted out so that it’s fit to sell
Finding a home that is suitable interstate
Working out how you could possibly afford to have two homes and two mortgages at the same time (then actually organising that)!
Packing up your stuff
Moving everything a couple of thousand kilometres
Unpacking it all the other end
Finding work, starting in a new workplace etc.
I could go on but you get the idea! You could think this appears to be a mammoth, near impossible task or at the very least extremely daunting. I totally agree, but having said that, my wife and I made a plan, put in a lot of hard work to stick to our plan and here we are 20 months later having successfully moved!!
How did we do it?
The answer, along with a great deal of effort, persistence and blessings, is ‘one step at a time’. A famous Chinese man once said, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’. No truer words could apply to our move interstate – but these words apply to far more than just that. We will never start anything or go anywhere unless we can overcome inertia – that is, the tendency to do nothing or remain unchanged.
Have you ever thought about doing something, no matter how big or how small and then just, didn’t? Of course you have – we all have! WHY? Maybe it was just because it was easier, more convenient and perhaps felt safer to leave things alone and stay right where you were? This is inertia and it can stop us from taking that first step which could lead us on a new and potentially incredible journey.
Have you ever looked at a Bible? Ever read one?
Perhaps you might have thought about some of our world’s problems – things like natural disasters, disease, hunger, poverty, injustice, crime and so on? These are truly massive, daunting problems – they make moving interstate look like child’s play! They are far too big for us to even really grasp fully, let alone try to deal with.
What if I was to tell you that the Bible offers solutions to these problems? Not just to one or some, but to them all? That’s an outrageous claim isn’t it?! Are you prepared to just totally ignore the possibly that it might be true? Finding the answer may be far easier than you think – you just need to overcome inertia and take the first step. Read God’s book – the Bible! It has the answers.
