Bible reflections - stillness
How many times have you shown the calm facade of being quite under control, when beneath the surface you don't really feel calm at all? Things happen in all of our lives that worry or concern us don't they — and the choice is ours as to how we deal with these challenges.
And sometimes the challenges are more than just everyday life.
Sometimes the storm beneath the surface is anxiety. Maybe it is the inner turmoil of never feeling like you are good enough or do a good enough job. Perhaps you doubt yourself and question your decisions in many situations. Are you letting down the ones you love?
Self confidence is a struggle, and low self esteem can be hard to shake. If you deal with this more than occasionally, you can feel physically exhausted at the end of a day where you really didn't do any thing physical at all. The fact is too, that the busy world we live in can easily make anxiety worse.
The Bible can be a great source of help when you feel like this. It talks about the "peace of God, which surpasses all understanding".
When I am anxious, one of the most powerful messages from the Bible for me, in my faith and belief in God, is found in Psalms and begins by saying, "God is our refuge and our strength” (Psalms 46:1, NIV), and then a few verses later God says "Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10, NIV). God is telling us here to stop, to take a breath, and to know that whatever else we are feeling, and whatever else might be changing around us, God is always there and does not change. God urges us to understand and accept that in the big picture, He is in control and if we trust Him He will be our strength, our refuge whenever we need it.
It takes faith to do this, but it is something well worth the effort.
