A journey
I don’t remember a time that I did not believe in God, although I also don’t remember actually thinking about Him particularly. I attended a Protestant Sunday school from a young age and went to church with my mother. Mum and Dad both taught Sunday school as teenagers. My husband was not from a particularly religious family but was sent to Sunday school.
It was not until after we were married and had three children that thoughts began to spring to my mind, prompted by a Billy Graham Rally held at the Adelaide oval. I’m not sure if I actually attended the rally where people were called to come forward to express their beliefs, but I know that I wouldn’t have done that and I felt a strong regret. Soon after, while hanging out the washing I had a weird feeling that someone was with me, but there was no one there.
My husband and I had attended church often. We began to query certain things that were said, taught or sung about in the church and this was the beginning of our journey of discovery.
When a Sunday school teacher told our daughter that her baby sister would not be saved because she was not christened, we began to look into infant baptism. In our research we found that christening is not baptism. True baptism is to be fully immersed in water as an adult who has the ability to understand what he or she is doing.
From there we looked into many aspects of the Bible, speaking to our Minister and talking with a couple who ran the local newsagency who we knew were religious. Our investigations continued for a considerable time, and now we believe we know the true meaning of God’s word, His plan for the earth and its inhabitants, and what He expects from His followers. Consequently we were eventually baptised and have been believers in that word for 50 years now.
As we go about the routine of our daily life we eagerly look forward in hope to the return of Jesus to set up a worldwide kingdom of justice and peace. We see Jesus’ return and kingdom as the only solution for this troubled and unhappy world. What a great solution to look forward to! All this and much more is in the Bible for anyone to read.
