Glory days

Have you ever had a time, perhaps a birthday, when you’ve thought “How did that happen?! Where did those years go?!”

Bruce Springsteen wrote a song called “Glory Days” (released in 1984). Besides a catchy tune, the lyrics reminisce about young people, when they are fit, healthy and beautiful. He goes on to say that those days seem to disappear in the blink of an eye.

I thought it was quite poignant that he performed this song alongside Paul McCartney at a recent concert (Glastonbury Festival June 2022). Much of the festival was a celebration of Paul’s 80th birthday.

The Bible speaks about the ageing process, “Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honour Him in your youth before you grow old and say, ‘Life is not pleasant anymore.’” (Ecclesiastes 12:1, NLT)

King Solomon wrote this partly from experience, but also because he knew that God is the only one who can do something about mortality. “He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.  They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:29-31, NLT)

If you want to know more about how this can happen, have a read of your Bible. It’s all there!
