Rush rush rush!
Is it just me, or does everyone these days seem to be in a big rush? People seem to need to do whatever they are doing as fast as possible. Don’t get me wrong, there are of course times when speed is of the essence. But having said that, on many ordinary days, I have witnessed people who appear to be ‘in a rush’ pushing past others in shops (even past those who are with small children, on crutches, or disabled). These people are so focused on their own task, that they don’t seem to care at all about anyone else around them. We know that this type of behaviour has also transferred into our driving, with all too regular road rage incidents the result!
It seems as though stress and being in a rush is just another part of the world’s ‘new normal’.
Again – please don’t get me wrong, it’s a bit embarrassing to confess that at times (often) I am as guilty of this as anyone else. As hard as we try, it’s just so easy to get caught up in the rush, racing from one thing to the next, then the next and the next and so on! Stress can build so easily in the middle of rushing that we can be in the grip of it before we even realise.
The bible says, “Be still, and know that I am God!” (Psalms 46:10, NLT)
The bible mentions meditation, prayer and mindfulness in many places – such great advice for all of us to help cope with this stressful world in a rush!
How much better off would we all be if we took even just a few minutes a day to stop, breathe and reflect on ourselves and our priorities?
In these days of stress and rushing, it seems that most people don’t have the time or the inclination to stop and think about anything much, let alone consider the existence of God.
The rest of the verse quoted above reads, “I will be honoured by every nation. I will be honoured throughout the world.” (Psalm 46:10, NLT)
Things will certainly have to change if that is to be the case – maybe it’s worth taking the excellent advice about taking some time out from the rush.
Why not use it to read a bible, there is so much more wonderful advice to be found in its pages.
