Bread of life

Jesus had a problem. He had recently miraculously fed 5000 people. Now there were some following him in the hope that he would provide them with food again.

Although Jesus loved helping people, his main purpose was to tell them about God’s coming kingdom, not take care of their daily needs.

“I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you.” (John 6:26-27  NLT)

There’s a message here for us too. It’s very easy to be focused on the here and now, thinking that each individual day is the most important of our lives.

Jesus’ message then and now is to look past today and think about the future. Where is our world heading? What sort of future is there for our children or our grandchildren? We’ve all heard the forecasts about climate change, pollution, over-population and the like.

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 (NLT)

He wasn’t talking about actual food or drink – Jesus was saying you don’t need to worry about the future IF YOU COME TO ME.

How to do that and share in the bread of life is right there, in your Bible.
