Giving vs getting
Many of us have recently enjoyed a holiday break. It was also a time when many people gave and received gifts.
Generally speaking, humans are more motivated to get than to give. From a very young age we are encouraged to think about what we want from life and how we can achieve it. This can include many things such as wealth, career, partner, house, health, body image, family, hobbies – the list goes on.
In contrast to this, the Bible tells us that God is all about giving. God gave this world form, then He gave it light, and then He gave it life. Down through the centuries, God gave warnings, He gave promises, and He gave help in time of need. He showed immense patience, mercy, kindness and finally love through giving His only son.
The Apostle Paul paraphrased some words of Jesus (who gave his life for us!): “… we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35 NIV)
The world is a much better place when we think of others before ourselves. The Bible also tells us God’s plan to make it so.
It's worth a read!
