The infinite vault of the sky

Looking up at the vaulted ceiling in the kitchen/living area of my son and daughter-in-law’s holiday house made me think of another vault. One created by God.

It’s referred to several times in the very first chapter of the Bible. An example is verse 8 (NIV)  “God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning —the second day.” I believe in God as the Creator of everything so I take this and the other parts of the creation account in the Bible book of Genesis literally.

The authority for this version’s interpretation of the original Hebrew word translated here as ‘vault’, is supported by Strong’s Bible concordance definition which says in part “an expanse, i.e. the firmament or (apparently) visible arch of the sky…”

Wherever you are in the open spaces, the sky is so much bigger than the area of the earth you can see. The vault of the sky has no limit.

Infinity is not something we can understand and reminds me of two things. The vast difference between us and God. And secondly the fact that God, despite this difference, cares so much about us He has given us the opportunity to become infinite. Details are in His Bible for anyone to read and act on. But it is our choice whether to take that action!
