Music
Why do we like music? If we evolved over millions of years to ensure our survival, then music wouldn’t be necessary. We would simply need a basic means of communication, like all the other animals.
But if you believe, as I do, that God created us ‘in His own image’ , as recorded in the Bible in Genesis chapter 1 verse 27, then the obvious differences between us and all other animals makes sense.
Our appreciation of and ability to make music is one of these differences. Whilst some animals have beautiful calls, humans are the only ones that use instruments to create music. According to AI, there are somewhere between 1000-1500 different types of musical instruments!
God gave us this ability for our enjoyment, but also as a way for us to show Him our appreciation. We find in the Bible that it is appropriate to sing praise to God.
“Praise the Lord! How good to sing praises to our God! How delightful and how fitting!” (Psalm 147:1 NLT)
We know that this will also be done in the future when Jesus comes back to the earth as king:
“This great choir sang a wonderful new song in front of the throne of God…” (Revelation 14:3 NLT)
Music has the ability to draw emotions out of us. It can make us feel happy or sad. It can bring back memories of a place or time in our lives. So the next time you’re enjoying a song spare a thought for God, who gave us this pleasure and is offering so much more for the future. It’s all spelt out in your Bible!
