In the beginning...

The first verse of Genesis chapter one reads, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth.” (NLT) So begins God’s book, the Bible.

When I read these words, several things occur to me.

The first is that, I am presented with a choice. I can take them on face value and believe what they say or I can choose not to believe them. God has given us all that choice but there are consequences depending on our choice.

The second is that, the words describe an action taken by God. He created the heavens and the earth. If I have chosen to believe that this is true, then it is simply mind-boggling to think of Him having such awesome power. It sets the rest of the Bible in context – God has awesome, unlimited power.

The third is that, if we simply read the first four words - “In the beginning God …” then we can  conclude that the Bible is all about God. The creation is all about God. There’s not much of a comparison between God and me, a humbling thought for a 21st century human.

I have chosen to believe. I recognise that I cannot understand God or His actions and in fact I am not meant to. This makes me all the more grateful, that a being with the awesome power to create the heavens and the earth and so much more, actually cares about me.

He cares about you as well. To find out how and why he cares about us and to see what the consequences of our decisions are - just read the Bible, God’s record for us.
