The thin line
Have you ever wondered what it is that separates the human race from animals? More specifically I’m thinking about our behaviour and morality - what stands between us and the "law of the jungle"?
My suggestion is that there is a very thin veneer, or line of civility and morality, that restrains the darker or more animal like parts of our human nature.
When referring to the police, who are largely responsible for maintaining law and order, this gets called the "thin blue line" given that police often wear blue uniforms. So take away the influence of the police and what are we left with?
Just a thin line.
Right now the world is in a chaotic state. The conflict in the Middle East is starting to put real pressure on fuel costs; and very soon, almost certainly, on fuel supplies too.
As I write this (late March) there are numerous news stories about people in Australia taking matters into their own hands and stealing fuel from others. After only a couple of weeks of just mild adversity, the thin line is already being stretched. It won’t take too much more for it to break and for chaos and anarchy to take hold.
In the Bible we read -
“And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken.” (Luke 21:25-26 NLT)
Sound familiar?
We also read in the next couple of verses:
“Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!”
(Luke 21:27-28 NLT)
If you’re a little afraid about what’s going on in the world and feel unsettled and fearful about where it’s heading, do yourself a favour and have a look at a Bible. You will find that God has a plan in place for a far far better world that you can be part of!!
